The southern Sunshine Coast is moving from talking about growth to preparing for it.
Stage 1 of The Wave will deliver 19km of new dual-track railway between Beerwah and Caloundra, including:
🚉 A major upgrade to Beerwah station
🚉 A new station at Bells Creek, serving Aura
🚉 A new station at Caloundra
Detailed design and pre-construction work are now underway, with major construction expected to begin in early 2027, subject to federal environmental approvals.
That is real progress for one of Queensland’s fastest-growing corridors.
The Sunshine Coast recently attracted 8.8% of Australia’s total net regional migration—the largest share of any regional destination in the country. Caloundra, Aura and the wider southern corridor are doing much of the heavy lifting as new residents, homes and businesses arrive.
That growth is not going to wait. We need the rail, roads, schools, services and commercial investment required to support it—and it is encouraging to see this project getting on track.
Our local representatives also deserve recognition for continuing to push the case for the Sunshine Coast.
Member for Caloundra Kendall Hatcher, Deputy Premier and Member for Kawana Jarrod Bleijie, Minister for Transport and Main Roads Brent Mickelberg, and state representatives across our region have been advocating for the infrastructure our communities need.
The Australian and Queensland governments have each committed $2.75 billion to Stage 1. It is a substantial investment and an important example of different levels of government working together on the Sunshine Coast’s future.
The project is expected to support thousands of regional jobs, improve access to employment and education, and eventually save passengers more than 45 minutes compared with driving during peak periods.
But these stations should become more than places where we simply catch a train. They can become welcoming community gateways connected to local businesses, housing, buses, walking, cycling and vibrant public spaces.
The station designs are now open for community feedback until 14 September 2026.
Let’s recognise the progress, participate constructively and help make these stations places that genuinely serve our growing communities.
