On Saturday evening I had the pleasure of attending the 10-year celebration recognising the partnership of Federal Members Andrew Wallace and Ted O’Brien. While the evening acknowledged a decade of working together through both opposition and government, what stood out to me wasn’t politics—it was purpose.

Listening to both Andrew and Ted speak, the conversation was overwhelmingly centred on the Sunshine Coast, Queensland and Australia’s future. There was genuine passion for creating opportunities, investing in infrastructure, supporting businesses, strengthening communities and leaving the region better than they found it. Yes, elections and political challenges were mentioned, as you would expect, but they were not the defining theme of the evening.

As President of the Caloundra Chamber of Commerce, I regularly have the opportunity to work with elected representatives from all levels of government. One thing has become increasingly clear: while politics often dominates headlines, the people representing our region spend far more of their time focused on practical outcomes than political point-scoring.

Whether it’s our Federal Members, our State representatives, or local government leaders, there are many people working tirelessly behind the scenes to advocate for better roads, transport, housing, tourism, business growth and community outcomes. These are long-term challenges that require collaboration across all levels of government, regardless of political persuasion.

In today’s political environment, it’s easy to become cynical. But Saturday night was a timely reminder that, at a local level, many of our representatives genuinely care about the future of our region and are committed to making a positive difference.

As a Chamber, we will continue to work constructively with representatives from every level of government and every political background. Our focus remains simple: supporting initiatives that strengthen our business community and help the Sunshine Coast continue to grow and prosper.

Sometimes it’s worth pausing to acknowledge those who dedicate themselves to public service. Whatever our political views, we all benefit when leaders work together in the best interests of our region.
